The SMASH Davis Site Director Ms. Phillips stopped by during one of my class periods, and she delivered a presentation on what the SMASH Academy program entailed. Initially, I was hesitant, and I felt unsure about the living in the dorms independently for 2 weeks. However, after I voiced my concerns with Mr. Lopez (my teacher during that period), he encouraged me to apply. He said something like, "If you're serious about the engineering field, don't miss out on this opportunity." From there, I eagerly filled out my application, vividly showcased my personality during the interview, and eventually accepted into the program. To this day, I will never forget the importance of getting know upperclassmen. I talked to people slightly older than me, and their experiences and insights about life, college expectations, and school in general left a noticeable impact within me. I felt genuinely inspired by seeing people like me, minorities from underprivileged backgrounds, have this pure passion to succeed. That drive from my peers, especially my older mentors, fostered and developed that confidence I needed to later be where I am today.
